What Inspires Intel STS Semifinalist Alex Spangher?

January 22nd, 2010 by InspiredbyEducation

Last week, Intel revealed the names of the 300 Intel STS hopefuls who made it to the semifinals. One of these semifinalists, Alexander Spangher, submitted an “Inspire” story which provides us a glimpse into his personal life and the things that inspire him. Below is an excerpt from Alex’s story. What inspires you?

Hi, my name is Alex Spangher. I’m an Intel Semi-finalist, a naturalist, and a passionate humanist. The Intel Semi-finalist prize is neither the motivation nor the impetus for my interest in science, nor, if I could offer any advice, should it be yours. But, who am I to lecture you? Let me share my story; sit back and, if possible, enjoy. I have always loved Nature, from camping in the Adirondack mountains at age 3 to researching renewable energy at Stony Brook over the summer. Since age 5 I have attended and volunteered at Sweetbriar Nature Camp, a camp located at Sweetbriar Nature Rehabilitation Center; a center with the goal of preserving wildlife through education. We rehabilitate injured and sick wildlife, yes, and the single lives we save go hand in hand with the life long love and appreciation of nature we generate through our education of the public. Also, I am a passionate Eagle Scout who loves hikes.

And remember to stay tuned to Inspire – the 40 finalists will be announced on January 27.
