February 11th, 2010 by InspiredbyEducation

Michael Comuniello – Division Avenue High School, Levittown, NY

Project: Science Fair, Science Unfair: Analysis of Equity in High School Science Research Education

Michael, 17, comes from a school where success in national science competitions is rare and he couldn’t help but admire those certain schools that year after year had success. This pattern of success intrigued him to investigate causality. He hopes that his “Science Fair, Science Unfair” research will inform high school educators of the factors influencing research program success. In addition to his science research achievements, Michael is also the Captain of his school’s Varsity soccer team, Valedictorian, Student Council President and Homecoming King.

Kevin Xu – Roslyn High School, Roslyn Heights, NY

Project: Relationships between Oncologist Gender, Participatory Decision Making, Anxiety and Breast Cancer Cure

As a result of his experience working with patients at New York City’s Elmhurst Hospital Center, Kevin, 17, decided to study how patient-physician relationships are related to disparities in urban breast cancer treatment. His project was one of the first studies to examine factors related to low standard care rates in the U.S. and highlighted the importance of ensuring patients and physicians are informed about the benefits of radiotherapy. Kevin enjoys ping pong, playing cello and running in his spare time.
