More than 1,611 high school students from 59 countries, regions, and territories have descended on San Jose, CA for the Intel Science & Engineering Fair, the world’s largest pre-college science competition. Students are currently setting up their projects for judging which takes place Wednesday. Walking the convention center floor we noticed a variety of projects here a just a few:

Ganindu Nanayakkara, from Sri Lanka, built a device that allows persons with disabilities to wirelessly operate a computer;

Alex Zuelke, of Temprance, Michigan, tested different methods of reinforcement as alternatives to rebar for reinforcing concrete; and

Derek Morales-Acosta, of Puerto Rico, researched the effectiveness of adding air bags to motorcycles.

These are just three of the fascinating projects these young scientists and inventors are presenting this week at Intel ISEF. Today Paul S. Otellini, President and Chief Executive Officer of Intel Corporation will visit with the young rock stars before opening ceremonies this evening.
