Intel Science Talent Search Winners and Wendy Hawkins on CNN!
March 21st, 2011 by InspiredbyEducationJust when you thought the Intel Science Talent Search, a program of Society for Science & the Public, couldn’t get any more exciting, IT DOES!
Last week, Intel Science Talent Search winners, Michelle Hackman and Evan O’Dorney were invited to the CNN studios to discuss their projects and their experiences at the Intel Science Talent Search 2011! Evan, who won first place and $100,000 dollars from the Intel Foundation, explained that for his project he was able to approximate the square root of a non-square integer, something that has never been done before. He also expressed his love for math from a very young age.
Michelle’s project was a bit different, as she examined the affect cell phones have on people and the psychological effects people feel when they’re taken away. Michelle’s research found that when people are without their cell phones, it causes them to become anxious; however, when they receive a text message or a phone call, they become very excited. Her research suggested that the public might actually be addicted to their phones!
Wendy Hawkins, executive director of the Intel Foundation, also participated in the interview and provided insight into the Intel Foundation program, as she emphasized Intel’s dedication to education. She noted that each year, Intel invests $100 million dollars in education, and works to offer opportunities to young inspiring talent such as the Intel Science Talent Search finalists.
