The Gathering Storm: U.S. Education and Workforce

October 27th, 2010 by InspiredbyEducation

This week, New York Times op-ed columnist, Thomas Friedman, posted an article highlighting the state of the U.S. education system. In the column, Friedman referenced former M.I.T. president, Charles M. Vest and the Council on Competitiveness’ recent “Rising Above the Gathering Storm Revisited: Rapidly Approaching Category 5” Report, which took a closer look at the efforts of both the government and private sector, over the past five years, to promote education that will allow for the U.S. to compete for quality global jobs. Former Intel Chairman and CEO Craig Barrett served on the original committee and recently testified before Congress.

Notable results from this survey indicate that the U.S. is:
• 6th in global innovation-based competitiveness, but 40th in the rate of change over the last decade
• 16th in college completion rate
• 22nd in broadband Internet access
• 48th in quality of K-12 math and science education
