Parents are more comfortable turning their kids off drugs than turning them on to science

October 21st, 2009 by Gail Dundas, Intel Global Communications Group

Today, we released the results of a survey which shows that parents feel more equipped to talk about drug abuse than math and science with their children.

Math and science education is becoming increasingly critical to America’s growth and well-being, yet American students generally aren’t excited about learning these subjects. Our survey found that parents can, and want to play a significant role in inspiring their kids to take an interest in math and science. They just need the right tools to be effective.

The survey revealed that although more than 50 percent of parents rank math and science as the subjects most critical to their children’s future, they feel that American schools are falling significantly short in these key areas. Moreover, these same parents often find themselves with little more understanding of these subjects than their children and without the necessary resources to bridge this gap.

To truly engage the nation’s next generation of innovators, we believe we need to appreciate the role that parents play in education and understand the barriers they face in helping their children excel in math and science. How can we help parents help their children?

Do you think parents play a key role in inspiring children to learn math and science? Are you more comfortable talking about drug use than math? Tell us more on the Speak Up page.
