It Might Be the Best Investment in this Economy
December 1st, 2008 by David Porush, CEO, MentorNetThe current economic troubles are scary. But like a ball team in the basement, a wise company will invest in young talent and the creation of human and social capital during a severe downturn. The return is many times the investment for a company. And in the long run, it’s really much less expensive to invest in people, who keep on giving back and growing, than in technology and physical facilities, all of which are subject to natural entropy and obsolescence and need continuous upgrading. I know many of the thousands of students we here at MentorNet serve could use a hopeful connection, especially now when it must be so daunting and frightening for those wondering what awaits them after graduation. Mentoring unleashes the power of one-to-one communication — that most plentiful and most powerful and largely free commodity. It’s a heckuva way to prepare for the not-too-distant future when all this will turn around while providing comfort and hope not only to the student, but as our MentorNet mentors tell us, satisfaction to the mentors, too.
