Women of Science – Stand Up!

September 18th, 2009 by Gail Dundas, Intel Global Communications Group

Forbes recognizes top women executives with science degrees in a recent article. In Fact, Intel’s own Lila Ibriham, who runs the emerging markets platform group, is one of the women profiled. The article also highlights several positive indicators related to closing the gap between men and women in science, including the National Research Council’s report that women who earn Ph.D.s in science are just as likely to land teaching positions, promotions and tenure at major research universities as their male counterparts. Similarly, the National Academy of Sciences recently reported that girls in the U.S. are now on par with boys in mathematical achievement. No surprise, as our top three winners at the 2009 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair were all women.

I liked this quote in particular from Sharon Nunes, a vice president in the systems and technology group at IBM talking about how science skills apply to business skills, “You learn about being analytical, about problem solving. You learn how to work on teams. These are critical skills you need to succeed in today’s world. These are all business skills.”

Who are your favorite women in science? Is it a teacher, parent or friend? Is it someone you read about in the newspaper? Let us know on the SPEAK UP, SHARE page, or by commenting on this post!
