Intel’s 2010 Science Talent Search Finalists in DC!
March 15th, 2010 by Caitlin Sullivan, Program Manager, Intel Science Talent Search, Society for Science & the PublicThe questions continue to come in – Could I have an electrical outlet? What shoes should I wear? Can I add more research? Those may seem like an odd combination of requests, but they make perfect sense for an Intel Science Talent Search Finalist who just arrived in Washington DC. These 40 high school seniors are the best and brightest young scientists from across the country. They have been performing real science research for years, some since middle school, and now they have a chance to present their work to the public in the historic Great Hall at the National Academy of Sciences.
Research in middle school? You may be imagining shy, “geeky” teenagers, but this group is far from dull. The list includes includes 14 varsity athletes, six newspaper editors, two black belts in the martial arts, one cheerleader and, yes, even one homecoming king!
After two days of intense evaluations, they will watch the last judge leave the Great Hall and, with a sigh of relief, open the doors for visitors of all ages to hear about their cutting edge research. Just like you, they have wondered about the world. However, unlike most of us, they have put their curiosity into action to produce some of the most inspiring science research around. They wondered…
How can I help my family deal with the symptoms of diabetis?
Can the natural gravitational pull of planets create “easy transit routes” throughout our solar system?
Can sound waves be converted into lower frequencies, to help those who are hard of hearing?
Can we breed mosquitos that can’t carry disease?
So while an electrical outlet and the right pair of shoes don’t seem to have much in common, their combination, along with 40 inspiring young scientists, will certainly be worth experiencing this week at the Intel Science Talent Search.
Come and wonder about the world with them.
